Every August, I notice something familiar happening around Boise — families are in motion. Summer is winding down, college move-in dates are circling on calendars, and parents are scrambling to check off every last item on the back-to-school list. As an oral and maxillofacial surgeon here at Black Pine OMS, I can tell you that oral health — particularly wisdom tooth evaluations — tends to land near the top of that list for a lot of local families this time of year, and for very good reason.

Late summer is genuinely one of the best windows to address wisdom teeth, especially for students heading off to college or university. Recovery time is easier to manage when a young adult is still at home, close to family support, and not yet buried in coursework or a new work schedule. If you have a teenager or young adult in your household and wisdom teeth haven’t been evaluated yet, this month is an ideal time to act. The Boise area has a strong community of families who are proactive about health, and I always appreciate seeing that same energy directed toward oral care.

Beyond wisdom teeth, August brings its own set of seasonal oral health considerations worth thinking about. Summer diets tend to skew sweet — sports drinks, iced coffees, lemonades, and popsicles are everywhere this time of year, and the sugars and acids in these beverages can quietly erode enamel and create conditions for cavities. My advice: stay well hydrated with water throughout the day, rinse after acidic drinks rather than brushing immediately, and keep up with consistent brushing and flossing even when schedules feel chaotic. It sounds simple, but routine is everything.

For athletes in the Boise area gearing up for fall sports seasons, now is also the right time to talk about mouthguard protection. Whether your student is playing football, soccer, basketball, or any contact sport, a properly fitted mouthguard can prevent serious dental and jaw injuries that are far more disruptive — and expensive — to treat than they are to prevent. I encourage parents to bring this up at their child’s next dental or medical appointment before practices begin in earnest.

Finally, if you or someone in your family has been putting off a consultation about jaw pain, impacted teeth, or any oral concern, I want to encourage you not to wait. The Boise community deserves access to thoughtful, personalized surgical care, and our team at Black Pine OMS is here to provide exactly that in a comfortable, welcoming environment. Whether you have a straightforward question or a complex concern, we would love to sit down with you.

Please don’t hesitate to reach out and schedule a consultation with us at Black Pine OMS. We are proud to serve the Boise area, and we look forward to helping your family head into the fall season with confidence and a healthy smile.
